The Rocky Ford Candle Company
After surviving a horrible illness, left with a compromised immune system, it was not a good thing for me to be exposed to candles containing various chemicals and carcinogenic agents. (cancer causing stuff) Typical candles are made from petroleum which is loaded with these and other allergens.
My whole life had changed. I went from an independent hard working woman to a fragile, helpless woman sitting in a chair, not being able to walk without assistance, hold a coffee cup, run my mouth or even complete an intelligent sentence. The Apache woman who cared for me sat in the rocking chair in my bedroom - and in my most frustrating moments quietly, softly kept saying "Patience is a virtue, my dear."
Over time I was restored by my Creator. I live, with pain, but I live.
There have been many changes in my life, but oh how I missed my candles. Then one day while visiting on the phone with an acquaintance from New York, I shared the experience of my illness. He said, "You need some of my candles to cheer you up." "What?", I exclaimed. Seems he was a "candle maker", had been for years. Wow! This was way cool.
He explained that his candles were made of 100% soybean wax, pure fragrances and a cotton wick. No chemicals whatsoever.
He graciously offered to share his secrets so I would never have to be without my candles again. A short time later he drove down from New York with all the stuff to make over 100 hand- poured candles in little 8 oz. Mason jars. I was ecstatic!
He gave to my beloved husband (the engineer) all the formulas and in a few days , there they were. It made me feel alive again, that I could help do something.("disabled" is a crappy term)
After thinking about it, I realized that for all those years we had planted soybeans on the family farm and now they had become an important part of my everyday joy, and I was not supporting foreign oil companies who have raped us for decades.
These little jars of candles act as an air freshener as well even when not lighted. Just take the plastic liner out from under the lid and put the Daisy lid back on and the whole room smells good during the day.
Soy candles have a "memory", so the first time you light it let it burn for at least one hour then they will "set" and burn perfectly all the way down each time consuming all the wax. You will see flame all the way down and they won’t burn a hole in the middle like most paraffin wax candles do so you will have to throw away a bunch of wax.
We use a higher percentage of scent oils to wax than most. That’s why they smell so good!
When all the wax is gone take the remaining couple of tablespoons and rub on your hands or legs as a skin softener. It’s good stuff!
Lite a blue berry muffin, Macintosh apple and curl up with a good book. When the family comes home they will think you have been baking all day.
The smell of gardenia, magnolia, blueberry muffin and vanilla made my home smell so good and each time I lit a candle and saw that little flame, I knew I was still alive. My little light was still shining.
I gave some away to my girlfriends, and they soon asked for more, then others found out about these long-lasting (they burn for 40 hrs.) little jars. So now I just want to share with others this clean, home-made, hand-poured product of American-grown soybeans.
When you light yours just look into that flame, take in the fragrance and thank God for your good health and loved ones.
